Bail set at $750,000 for man charged with beating pregnant girlfriend

A man angry that his girlfriend was pregnant with another man’s child is charged with punching her repeatedly in the stomach area, causing her to lose her nearly full-term baby daughter, authorities said today. Jovanny Martinez, 23, who is the father of the woman’s 11-month-old child, is charged with homicide of an unborn child, aggravated battery to a pregnant woman and aggravated domestic battery, police said. Judge Laura Sullivan ordered Martinez held today in lieu of $750,000 bail. Martinez was arrested Tuesday after he was identified by his 25-year-old girlfriend as the person who beat her about 11 p.m. on July 8 in the Back of the Yards neighborhood, police said. Initially, the woman had told police she was walking in the 4800 block of South Laflin Street when she was attacked by several women and a man. The woman thought her water broke after the beating but then saw that she was bleeding, according to Assistant State’s Attorney Christy Brewer. She went to Mount Sinai Hospital, where she delivered a stillborn baby girl the next day. The baby was pronounced dead at 2:44 p.m. on July 9, according to the Cook County medical examiner’s office. An autopsy revealed the baby died in the womb from an assault on the mother, according to the medical examiner’s office. The baby girl was 28 to 30 weeks old, Brewer said. Martinez, of the 4700 block of South Paulina Street, was charged with burglary in February 2012 and the case was continued in April of this year. In May of 2011, he pleaded guilty to disorderly conduct and aggravated assault with a deadly weapon, an air rifle, and was given a year of probation.
